Riddle me this

Alright, alright. Everyone knows we need a defenceman (Top 2 hopefully, a least top 3). So who's it gonna be? The longer Lowe waits, the more it resembles last year's goalie conundrum. Should he wait until teams drop out of contention? Or should he maybe overpay a bit now to make sure he gets what he wants (and needs)?

Tell me who you think the Oil should acquire, and who you'd be prepared to give up in return.

If all the talk of Eric Brewer is true, I'm curious if another player will join him on the way back.
I'm going to say Brew and Jamal Mayers for Winchester and a draft pick - if there is a deal at all.
St. Loo may want more in return and I can't imagine what Lowe would offer.
The Oilers gain a talented d-man who was just starting to show what he could do (then Kevin Lowe got to acquire Chris Pronger - that's not exactly giving away a player) and a tough winger who can provide energy, a veteran presence but not much in the way of scoring.
Mayers did have a strong season last year - unless you look at his -21 plus/minus - but he was playing for the Blues.

That's my guess - if St. Loo are involved in a trade at all.

Brewer? We sold high.
My list would include three Albertans, at least two of which are pending UFAs.
Among offensive Dmen who might be available, Brad Stuart seems the obvious choice. The Bruins are going nowhere this year; some farm depth would help there.
Among defensive Dmen, I'd prefer the under-rated Chris Phillips but I'd settle for Anton Volchenkov. The latter handles the puck like a grenade so there's some risk there. Ottawa could also use some farm depth, though they'd prefer a 2nd-line FW.
And finally, all the AM radio call-in dummies are full of fantasies about Duncan Keith or Brent Seabrook for an autographed Ted Green poster, but Jim Vandermeer is the inspired choice. He's no Denis Potvin, but he takes care of business in his own end. And Chicago wouldn't ask for much since they've got about 11 NHL-ready Dmen. I bet a middling pick might do it.

I like your picks better.
All the rumours suggest a Brewer deal.
I'm trying to figure out what Lowe WILL do, not what I think, in my wisdom, what Lowe SHOULD do.

Chicago does seem like a good trading partner, especially with a glut of blueliners - and some goodies too.
